Sub-Zero’s classic combination built-ins give the refrigerator and the freezer a compressor each, so a freezer that stays cold says little about the side that has warmed. On the fresh-food side, the usual culprit is circulation that has quit: an evaporator fan near the end of its life, or a coil frosted over because a door sat slightly open for an afternoon. Sub-Zero recommends 38°F for the refrigerator and asks you to allow 24 hours after any change before judging it, which is worth doing before you ring.
The grille at the toe kick
The frame shows what a condenser looks like after too long without attention: a coil furred with dust and a vacuum brush working the pan beneath it. The manufacturer puts the interval at six to twelve months, shorter where dogs or cats shed, and rules out chemical cleaners on the coil. A choked condenser warms both sides together, and that is how we tell it apart from a fan fault confined to the refrigerator.
