Ice maker and ice machine
Sub-Zero Ice Maker Has Made No Ice for Days
In the owner's words
The bin has been empty since the weekend. The freezer is as cold as ever, but nothing drops into the bucket and I never hear the ice maker fill.
Short answerAn ice maker that has made nothing for days, inside a freezer that is still cold, is nearly always starved of water or told to stop rather than broken. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Seattle, (206) 339-4211, checks the supply, the fill tube and the valve before anyone talks about replacing the ice maker itself.

No Ice for Days: how it usually goes
- Most often Water not reaching the mold: frozen fill tube or starved supply
-
Gives itself away by No fill sound on a cold freezer, and sometimes a small plug of ice where the tube meets the ice maker
Price band Ice maker, water valve or supply line$270–$750
- Sometimes Inlet water valve no longer opening
-
Gives itself away by Supply valve open, filter in date, fill tube clear, and still not a drop reaching the mold
Price band Ice maker, water valve or supply line$270–$750
- Rarely Ice maker module, or the control that powers it, gone quiet
-
Gives itself away by The ice maker never starts a cycle, even once water has been proven at the valve

What a cold freezer with an empty bin tells us
The freezer is doing its job, so the refrigeration is not the story. An ice maker runs a short loop: it calls for water, the fill tube carries it into the mold, the freezer turns it solid, the cubes drop. On a cabinet that is still cold, the broken link is almost always the water.
Where the water stops
The fill tube enters through the back or side wall of the freezer, the coldest stretch of plumbing in the house. If supply pressure sags, or the bin is pulled with the ice maker still on, the last trickle can freeze and seal the tube. A half-closed supply valve, a kinked line or a spent filter starves it the same way; Sub-Zero asks for a steady 20 to 100 psi.
On 600-series built-ins, ICE flashing with SERVICE means the water valve stayed open too long, and the service manual looks first at a jammed cube, pressure and the valve. We condemn the ice maker module only once water is proven at the valve.
What you can check safely
- Confirm at the panel that the ice maker is switched on; a cleaning, a filter change or a power cut often leaves it switched off.
- Push the ice bin fully home and level; on some models the bin works a switch, and a crooked bin stops production.
- Where your model has a wire shut-off arm, make sure it rests in the down position, and lift out any cube jammed in the ice maker.
- Check that the supply valve feeding the refrigerator is open and the water filter is seated and in date.
Owner checks end there. Sealed tubing, wiring behind the grille and anything held by screws belongs on a service call — Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Seattle, (206) 339-4211.
Questions owners ask about this
How long should a Sub-Zero take to make ice after it has been switched back on?
Sub-Zero's own guidance is to wait 24 hours. The freezer has to reach temperature first, and the fill tube only delivers water when the ice maker asks for it, which can be hours apart. If the bin is still empty after a full day with the freezer at 0°F, the fault is real.
Can I thaw a frozen fill tube myself?
Sub-Zero's answer is a manual defrost: turn the freezer off for four to six hours, or use your model's compartment-off setting, then restart it. That clears the ice but not whatever froze it, usually a dip in supply pressure, a dripping valve, or a bin pulled out while the ice maker was on.
Does Seattle's soft water make scale a likely cause here?
Seldom. Seattle's supply is soft, so the mineral crust that chokes valves and molds on hard water rarely builds up in city kitchens. That is why Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Seattle, (206) 339-4211, starts with water flow, the fill tube and the valve, and leaves descaling near the bottom of the list.
