Ice maker and ice machine

No Ice Since the Water Filter Was Changed

In the owner's words

The filter light came on, so I fitted a new cartridge three days ago. The ice maker has not made a cube since.

Short answerWhen ice stops right after a filter change, the new cartridge is the first suspect: not turned fully home, the wrong one for the manifold, or air still in the line. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Seattle, (206) 339-4211, starts at the filter, because that is usually where the fault came in.

A fault with a start date

Most ice-maker faults creep in over weeks. This one has a date attached, so the search starts at the filter, and the freezer and the ice maker module can wait.

Say that date when you ring. A fault that began the same afternoon as a cartridge change is a different job from one that began two weeks later, and the second usually turns out not to be about the filter at all.

What we usually find at the manifold

The classic case is a twist-in cartridge stopped a little short of home: it looks installed, the indicator is reset, and no water passes. Next is a lookalike cartridge that never sealed. Air only delays the first ice. With a correct cartridge seated and a day gone, we move upstream to the valve and supply line.

The waiting matters more than it sounds. An ice maker that lost its supply does not resume the moment water comes back; it finishes the cycle it was in, then fills, then freezes. A bin emptied in the meantime looks exactly like a bin that is still failing, so give it a full day before deciding the reseat did nothing.

What you can check safely

  • Turn the cartridge out and back in clockwise until it stops; Sub-Zero's twist-in filters do not click, so a firm stop is the only sign.
  • Check that the small O-ring gaskets sit in place on the cartridge prongs.
  • Confirm the cartridge suits your unit; Sub-Zero's online filter finder matches it to the serial number.
  • Allow 24 hours, then discard the first full bucket of ice to help clear air from the line.

Owner checks end there. Sealed tubing, wiring behind the grille and anything held by screws belongs on a service call — Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Seattle, (206) 339-4211.

Questions owners ask about this

Why would a new filter stop the ice maker at all?

Changing the cartridge lets air into the water path, and Sub-Zero advises discarding the first full bucket of ice afterwards partly to purge it. A cartridge not turned fully home is the other usual cause: the path through the manifold never opens, and the ice maker waits.

A little water spilled when the old filter came out. Is something broken?

No. The old cartridge is full of water, and Sub-Zero calls a spill of several drops normal. Dripping from the housing after the new cartridge is in is different: check the O-rings and the seating, and close the supply valve if it continues.

Can a cheaper online cartridge cause this?

It can. Sub-Zero does not sell or recommend filters through online retailers, and a near-match can seat loosely or leak. If the ice stopped the day a bargain cartridge went in, Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Seattle, (206) 339-4211, checks the fit first.
