When the milk goes before the ice cream
A refrigerator that warms while the freezer stays hard has already given away half the diagnosis. A combination Sub-Zero keeps its two compartments on separate refrigeration, which the maker calls dual refrigeration, so the search begins inside the fresh-food side and stays there until something points elsewhere. On the classic built-ins the fan in that side is powered only while the shut door keeps a switch pressed, which is why a failed switch looks exactly like a failed motor.
The door, before anything costly
Sub-Zero puts a door that does not close fully and a damaged gasket near the top of its checks for a warm refrigerator, and the service manual adds a hinge problem as a reason a door stays ajar. The frame above shows the first thing we look for: a gasket corner that has come away from its door. A crowded door bin can hold the door off its seal just as well. The same manual counts an interior light still lit after the door closes among the causes of a warm compartment.
One threshold is worth knowing. When the fresh-food side has passed 48°F, Sub-Zero’s guidance is that cleaning the condenser is unlikely to bring it back, so that is the point to ring rather than wait. A leak in the refrigerator’s own sealed system is possible, but we arrive there only after air, door and sensors are cleared.
