Which room, and how warm it gets
In a house stepping down a hillside, the wine cabinet is not always in the kitchen. It may sit in a lower-floor room, a den or a bar area, and that room matters as much as the cabinet. Sub-Zero designs its indoor units for surroundings between 60 and 90°F, and states plainly that no repair can correct a unit’s performance while the room is outside that range. Air first, compressor last
Sub-Zero’s troubleshooting for a warm wine unit names four causes: one of several fans, a sensor or thermostat, the door seal, and the sealed system itself. Our order follows the air. On the undercounter models the condenser is reached by taking the kickplate off at the bottom front, and that low opening collects dust, pet hair and lint from the floor. A furred condenser makes the compressor work harder for less, and both zones slide upward together. Where one zone drifts on its own, the fan serving it is the likelier cause. The compressor, below the meter probes in the frame, is the last thing we condemn.
New bottles and a full day
A case of wine that has just come in from the car raises the temperature for a while, and once anything has been put right, Sub-Zero’s advice is to give the unit 24 hours to come back to normal. On the electronic panels, check that neither zone has been nudged toward the warm end of its 34 to 65°F range.
