Years behind the grille
A Sub-Zero that has stood in the same kitchen for a long time has usually had its condenser forgotten. On the classic built-ins the coil sits behind the grille, out of sight, and kitchen dust settles on it year after year. It rarely stops the cabinet outright. The compressor simply runs longer to shed the same heat, until a warm spell asks more than a matted coil can give, and the refrigerator starts losing a degree or two by late afternoon. Sub-Zero’s maintenance advice is to clean that coil once or twice a year, sooner where a dog or cat sheds, and to leave chemical cleaners aside and the fins unbent. When we find a coil in that state we clean it, then take readings before anything costlier is discussed.
When the number is wrong, not the cold
Sometimes the refrigerator is fine and the display is not, or the reverse. The service manual for the classic built-ins gives a compartment ten degrees or more off its displayed temperature an entry of its own, and the cause it names is a misread compartment thermistor. A thermometer on the middle shelf, left for a few hours, settles the question.
