What a warm refrigerator over a cold freezer narrows down
The freezer keeps ice cream hard while the refrigerator above or beside it drifts from cold to merely cool. On Sub-Zero combination built-ins the two sides run separate compressors, so the freezer’s health tells us little about the refrigerator and a great deal about where not to look.
What we usually find is the fresh-food fan. In the service manual for the 600-series built-ins, that fan is fed only while the compressor runs, and through a switch the closing door presses. A worn motor, a blade knocked out of line, or a depressor bent out of reach of its switch will each leave the air still. The cold then stays locked on the evaporator coil while the shelves warm.
Reading the temperature honestly
The number on the panel is not a measurement. Sub-Zero states that the display shows the set point, and that food temperature, not air, is the proper measure. Its method is a thermometer in a glass of water placed in the middle of the compartment, halfway back and halfway up, and left for twelve hours. That reading is worth having before you call, because a sensor feeding the control a wrong temperature is one of the rarer causes on this page, and it only gives itself away once fan, seal and condenser have been cleared.
Steps, slopes and parking
The western side of the ridge is steep in places. When you book, mention where a car can pull in, how many steps lead to the door, and whether the kitchen is easier to reach from the back. Have the model number ready; on classic built-ins it is printed on a tag inside a door, near the top hinge.
